The Fresno Bee reports members of the Land O’ Lakes dairy cooperative in Tulare, Calif. donated the equivalent of a tanker truck of milk to area food banks.

The 12,000 half-gallons of donated milk was processed by Producers Dairy in Fresno and coordinated by the California Association of Food Banks. The milk was distributed to three area food banks. The association plans to replicate the model with other dairy cooperatives and processors throughout California.

Pete Garbani, director of Western milk supply for Land O’ Lakes sees agrees and sees the opportunity for other cooperatives to supply milk donations.

"There are many other cooperatives and processors that could do this and be part of an effort like this," Garbani said.

Food banks have previously received limited milk donations with a loss of regional milk processors.
