A fire at a dairy near Bigelow, Minn., killed 27 calves on Tuesday.

According to KOWA News, the property owners were not home at the time of the blaze, and a neighbor called officials after noticing smoke coming from the barn. However, by the time fire crews arrived, the barn was already fully engulfed by the same.

“We protected all of his surrounding buildings - the barn had way too big a head start on us,” Bigelow Fire Chief Paul Hohensee said.

Officials have yet to name the cause of the fire though they suspect electrical problems ignited the inferno. Read more.

This fire marks the latest in a string of similar fires at dairies across the nation. Over the weekend, seven animals were killed at a California dairy in a fire driven by high winds, and fire at an Idaho dairy killed nearly 20 calves in late-May.
