A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine finds that when it comes to calcium, real food trumps supplements.
In the report, Douglas Bauer, a professor of medicine at the University of California-San Francisco, reviewed research on calcium supplements and concluded to be on the safe side, it's better to get your calcium from foods instead of pills.
Another study this year found a similar result. In that study, calcium supplements led to a higher risk of heart disease for men, though the same results were not seen in women. See, “Another reason to get calcium from food rather than supplements.”
A calcium-rich diet can also lower the risk of developing kidney stones.
Other benefits of regularly consuming dairy products include treating obesity, fighting osteoporosis, preventing type 2 diabetes, decreasing the risk of stroke and lowering the risk for heart disease. A study released earlier this year found that cheese does more than just taste good – it also decreases the likelihood of developing cavities.
