Dehorning is the subject of actor Ryan Gosling’s latest venture, that of animal-rights activist.

Gosling, lending his name to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is urging milk producers to stop a “barbaric practice.”

PETA released Gosling’s letter to Jerry Kozak, President and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), on Wednesday. In his letter, Gosling suggests breeding for polled cows rather than dehorning. View the letter here.

According to the Associated Press in a report here, a spokesman from NMPF responded to Gosling’s letter by pointing that cows’ horns are dangerous. De-horning reduces injuries to both cows and farmers.

Earlier this year, Dairy Herd Management published an article on dehorning, featuring guidelines and advice for handling the necessary task with veterinarians. Read, “Dehorning done right.”
