Homeland Security Newswire reports the wildfires in Texas have displaced thousands and will continue as drought conditions and high winds fuel the fire.

Texas Forest Service director Tom Boggus said there’s no containment and the current extreme conditions have made the fires almost impossible to control. Boggus told CBS News the winds have subsided Wednesday which may allow firefighters to contain areas near Austin.

The wildfires have destroyed more than 1,000 homes and forced over 5,000 residents to evacuate. Governor Rick Perry has delayed campaigning to return to Texas and may miss the first Republican debate since announcing his candidacy.
