With strong prices in the U.S. butter and cheese market, it may seem that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine holds little impact on milk prices. But for farmers in the United Kingdom, already caught in a supermarket price war driving prices down, the Russia versus Ukraine conflict was the weight that tipped the scales against them.

The Russian ban on EU produce prompted the group Farmers for Action to poll members asking whether or not direct action should be taken. Within 24 hours, more then 500 “yes” votes were received, reported the The Independent (UK).

A spokesman for the group expected prices to fall up to 3 percent per liter since May, as the region experiences its highest milk surplus since 2012.
