May proved to be another record month for U.S. dairy exports.
The U.S. Dairy Export Council showed in its monthly “Global Dairy Market Outlook” that dairy exports totaled $629 million in May, up 26 percent from last year and he second straight month of record export shipments.
The aggregated export volume of dry ingredients, cheese and butterfat was 179,684 tons, which is 3 percent higher than April on a daily-average basis and 13 percent above last year’s levels.
On a total-solids basis, exports made up nearly 17 percent of U.S. milk production in May – the most ever.
The U.S. was the only top five exporter to see milk production go up in May, albeit fractionally. Decreases were seen in the other top exporters, including New Zealand (down 26 percent), Australia (down 8 percent), Argentina (down 5 percent) and the European Union (down 2 percent).
However, the report added that global milk production is “starting to track close to year-ago levels in the major export regions after lagging since mid-2012.”
