Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculure renewed support for dairy producers to become more environmentally sustainable. Now, some of these resources are being directed to one Upper Midwest university.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the University of Wisconsin-Madison will receive $9.9 million from the USDA over the next five years to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint by finding climate solutions.

“We’re going to do everything we can at the USDA to equip our farmers and producers to be able to deal with whatever the challenges may be,” U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is quoted as saying. 

Reducing greenhouse gases will be a major focus of the USDA-funded study. 

The university is teaming with the University of Michigan, Pennsylvania State University, University of Arkansas, Cornell, North Carolina A&T, and the University of Washington as part of the USDA’s $19.5 million initiative that will include 29 universities across 24, four federal agencies and 150 nonprofit agencies. Vilsack renewed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the dairy industry first signed in December 2009. It supports the dairy industry’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2050. Read, “USDA renews sustainability efforts with dairy industry.”
