Research by the University of South Australia shows Australians could save nearly $2 billion in health care expenses by consuming the recommended daily amount of dairy products, according to Weekly Times Now.

University research shows dairy can save billions in health careAbout 65 percent of Australians don’t get their recommended daily servings of dairy products.

Research by the health economics and social policy group at the university considered the benefits of consuming dairy products and health care expenses caused by low dairy consumption in the country.

Leonie Segal, the study co-author, listed dairy’s beneficial effects on type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension and osteoporosis. Dairy products also help to maintain a healthy body weight.

Findings from the research were shared in New Zealand at the Nutrition Society conference last week.
