Fresh off a big campaign to label products containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs), another of Vermont’s controversial 2014 legislative initiatives has come to fruition – allowing for pickup of raw milk at farmers’ markets.
It should be clear that the law does not allow the sale of raw milk at farmers’ markets, but buyers may indeed pickup milk they’ve previously purchased. But, the fact that raw milk will be available at the farmers’ markets could increase sales as visibility grows.
Vermont does divide its raw milk producers into sizes based on production. Tier 1 producers may sell up to 12.5 gallons per day, while Tier 2 producer may sell up to 40 gallons per day. Tier 1 and 2 producers also have weekly limits of 87.5. New customers must have the opportunity to visit the farm where the milk is produced under the new law. Only Tier 2 producers will able to deliver milk to farmers’ markets.
