Farmers Livestock producers who suffer from arthritis can learn ways to manage pain and prevent injury at a Nov. 19 webinar.

The National AgrAbility Project at Purdue University will host the free webinar to provide an overview of the tasks related to livestock production and to show the relationship between arthritis pain management and those tasks. "Osteoarthritis, Joint Stress and Injury Prevention in Livestock Production" will begin at 3 p.m. (EST).

Arthritis is the No. 1 disability-causing disease in America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 50 million Americans have been diagnosed with at least one form of arthritis.

Arthritis is also an increasing concern for farmers and ranchers. Pain and decreased functionality are among the occupational risks associated with animal agriculture. Livestock production is the top-ranked occupation among National AgrAbility Project clients (25.6 percent), and arthritis is the top-ranked disability (12.5 percent).

Topics to be discussed at the one-hour webinar:

  • Arthritis limitations and barriers.
  • Sources of joint stress and injuries common in livestock production.
  • Ergonomic and mobility issues.
  • Examples of pain management and control options and assistive-technology solutions.

Amber D. Wolfe, AgrAbility project coordinator for the Arthritis Foundation, will lead the presentation. Wolfe serves as a national resource for rural arthritis issues, particularly those related to agriculture. She provides training workshops and assists in developing resources related to rural arthritis.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Register online at https://purdue.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0AiqqpETB8RU2IB by Nov. 14. Instructions for accessing the webinar will be sent to registrants by Nov. 18.
