During last month’s meeting, the KLA Board of Directors took action to endorse the transition of the KLA Dairy Committee to council status within the KLA governance structure. In early 2008, several dairy producers approached KLA volunteer leaders and staff to discuss the potential for dairy producers to be represented by KLA. At the time, Dairy Committee members indicated a desire to achieve council status. Members set a goal of 65,000 lactating cows or the equivalent revenue. The Dairy Committee reached that goal last month.
Today, the KLA Dairy Council is comprised of dairies, heifer development operations and calf feeding facilities. Council members produce 1.27 billion pounds of milk each year from more than 50,000 cows. Heifer and calf operations include more than 50,000 head of cattle.
Volunteer leaders include Chairman Kyle Averhoff of Royal Farms Dairy, Garden City, and Vice Chairman T.J. Curtis from Forget-Me-Not Farms, Cimarron. Dairy Coordinator Jody Wacker provides staff support for the council.
