KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In honor of National Ag Day, Dairy Farmers of America, Inc. (DFA), through its DFA Cares Foundation, is kicking off the DFA Cares Food Drive to raise awareness for and help address the needs of hungry Americans.
National Ag Day, hosted by the Agriculture Council of America, is intended to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture. Every day, dairy farmers — like thousands of others in agriculture — work to deliver quality, nutritious food products to the nation.
DFA is inviting its members, staff and friends in the industry to join the effort now through the start of June Dairy Month. A starting goal of $5,000 has been established, and funds raised will benefit Feeding America, the nation’s largest network of food banks.
The DFA Cares Food Drive is the first in a series of activities planned throughout 2011 to benefit Feeding America and its member food banks in cities with DFA plants and offices across the nation, including Harvesters, a Kansas City, Mo.-based member of the Feeding America network.
The food drive aligns with the Cooperative's core value of community and is an extension of a hunger and nutrition initiative at DFA. This effort encompasses policy advocacy and legislative outreach, as well as collaboration with federal and local hunger and nutrition programs.
“We believe that milk and other dairy products can be utilized to improve nutrition, fight hunger and combat obesity,” said Jackie Klippenstein, vice president of industry and legislative affairs. “DFA is committed to identifying ways to expand and increase the consumption of dairy products in order to grow a fitter nation.”
