The application deadline for fiscal year 2011 funding through the USDA Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) is Friday (1/21). GRP is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore and enhance grasslands through permanent conservation easements or long-term rental contracts. Priority for fiscal 2011 funding will be permanent conservation easement applications.
GRP emphasizes the preservation of native and natural grasslands, support for grazing operations, plant and animal biodiversity and protection of grazing land that is under multiple threats of conversion to other land uses. Land under Conservation Reserve Program acres expiring in the next 12 months is eligible for enrollment in GRP.
State Conservationist Eric Banks suggested interested producers stop by a USDA Service Center to visit with Natural Resources Conservation Service or Farm Service Agency staff about the program.
