Sproul Ranch of Sedan is among seven regional nominees competing for the 2011 NCBA Environmental Stewardship Award. The national winner will be announced during a February 3 event at the Cattle Industry Convention in Denver.
Bill and Peggy Sproul own a cow-calf and stocker grazing business on native tallgrass prairie. The Sprouls have removed more than 30,000 invasive trees to expand open prairie on the ranch. Ponds are fenced to restrict livestock entry, with some water access points stabilized by large gravel. The family has worked with state wildlife officials to increase quail and prairie chicken populations.
KLA and Ranchland Trust of Kansas, a KLA affiliate, nominated Sproul Ranch for the award. Other groups supporting the ranch’s nomination are The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Wild Turkey Federation.
