Farm and Dairy reports the NCBA has agreed to return $217,000 as part of a resolution stemming from an audit last July presented by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board.
The NCBA will pay back questionable expenses taken from the beef checkoff program. Expenses and other issues determined in the July audit included how employees’ time is recorded, travel costs and other expenses charged to the program.
Examples of travel expenses included one senior staff member’s wife expensing $3,592 in travel costs to New Zealand for a beef conference. The member’s wife and child’s travel expenses to San Antonio were also expensed to the overhead cost pool. The audit’s findings concluded family members accompanying senior staff members on industry trips should not be covered by checkoff funds.
Other issues included employee time recorded for charity events and the NCBA’s use of credit cards without coding expenses to specific projects.
The audit and resolution resulted in a change in the way NCBA costs are funded. Some events and related costs will be paid for by several sources rather than solely by the Beef Checkoff program.
