Air district rule reinstated

The governing board of the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District voted last week to readopt Rule 4570. This rule regulates the volatile organic compound emissions from dairies and other confined animal facilities.

According to Western United Dairymen the action was anticipated. The action came after a court ruled that the district did not sufficiently address the public health impact of 4570 and the district had to set aside the rule until a health study was complete.

Now that the air district has completed a comprehensive health report, the rule could be re-adopted. The air district had requested that dairies continue compliance with the rule while it was in suspension.
