Another reason to get calcium from food rather than supplements

Calcium supplements may seem a like a quick fix for busy people, but a new study shows that it may lead to a higher risk of heart disease for men. Instead, reaching for calcium-packed foods may be the way to go.

The study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, found that men who took at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium supplements daily had a 20 percent higher chance of dying from cardiovascular disease.

Qian Xiao, the lead author and a cancer prevention fellow at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., said in a Bloomberg interview that the findings add to the “evidence base,” but more research is needed to “clarify the underlying mechanism.”

Instead of supplements, consumers may want to turn to foods that are naturally high in calcium. 

Susanna Larsson, an associate professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, advises that “calcium should preferably be obtained from foods. Good sources of calcium include low-fat dairy foods, beans and green leafy vegetables.”
