California July Class prices announced

California’s July 2014 Class 4a/4b milk prices were announced on Friday, Aug. 1.

The Class 4a butter-powder price increased 39¢ from June, to $23.58/cwt., and is $4.97 more than July 2013. The January-July 2014 average stands at $23.03/cwt., $5.00 more than the same period a year ago.

The Class 4b price, at $18.69/cwt., is 38¢ lower than a month earlier, but $3.04 more than July 2013. The January-July 2014 average is $20.35/cwt., $4.36 more than the same period a year ago.

The July Class 4b price is $2.91 less than the comparable federal order Class III milk price of $21.60/cwt. Year-to-date, the average Class 4b price is $2.17 less than the Class III average.

 

June dairy product report

USDA released its monthly Dairy Products report on Aug. 1, summarizing June 2014 production estimates. Highlights include:

Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 916 million lbs., 0.5% above June 2013, but 5.2% below May 2014. Year-to-date (YTD) production stands at 5.6 billion lbs., up 1.5% from 2013.

• American type cheese production totaled 349 million lbs., 3.8% below June 2013 and 10.8% below May 2014. YTD production stands at 2.2 billion lbs., down 0.8% from 2013. Cheddar cheese production totaled 256 million lbs. in June, 3.8% below June 2013. YTD production stands at 1.6 billion lbs., down 0.4% from 2013.

Italian type cheese production totaled 409 million lbs., 4.4% above June 2013, but 1.2% below May 2014. YTD production stands at 2.5 billion lbs., up 4.6% from 2013. Mozzarella cheese production totaled 327 million lbs., 6.1% above June 2013. YTD production stands at 1.95 billion lbs., up 6.7% from 2013.

Butter production was 140 million lbs., 0.2% below June 2013 and 15.0% below May 2014. YTD production stands at 981 million lbs., down 3.1% from 2013.

• Nonfat dry milk for human consumption totaled 148 million lbs. in June, up 13.1% from June 2013; YTD output stands at 911 million lbs., up 5.0%

 • Skim milk powders totaled 51.8 million lbs., down 11.1% from June 2013. YTD production stands at 296 million lbs., up 1.4%.

• Dry whey (total) was estimated at 79.1 million lbs., down 0.6%. YTD production is estimated at 441 million lbs., down 12.4%.

HighGround Dairy’s Eric Meyer termed the report bullish for cheese, butter and dry whey, but bearish for nonfat dry milk.
