Dairies provide value-added items to stay on the farm

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports dairy farmers are producing cheese and other value-added products as a way of covering the expenses on the farm.

Karen Bianchi-Moreda, a panel member at the Sonoma Valley Cheese conference and farmer on a 440-cow dairy, says dairies will diversify their operation to stay in business.

Bianchi-Moreda works with her brother, father and her son, a fifth-generation farmer who recently returned home after graduating college. In additional to selling milk, their farm produces artisan cheese in California.

The cheese business is a developing industry in the area. Three new companies have started making cheese in Sonoma and Marin counties in the past three years. The two counties have become an area known for its artisan cheese production. Between the two counties, there are eight million pounds of cheese produced annually with a retail value of $119 million.

California dairies have explored additional niche markets, selling organic products and offering farm tours and festivals.

The new business ventures help pay existing costs and they provide hope for the future as dairies get children involved so they may take over the family farm.
