The owner of a North Carolina dairy has reportedly pled guilty to charges stemming from an animal waste spill into the French Broad River in 2012.

According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, Tap Root Dairy in Fletcher, N.C., didn’t properly maintain lagoons designed to contain the waste.

Tap Root Dairy LLC agreed to pay an $80,000 fine, while owner William “Billy” Franklin Johnston agreed to pay a $15,000 fine, reports the Black Mountain News near Asheville, N.C.

The newspaper reports that Johnston could also face a maximum of a year in prison.
