A new video on the proper construction of a corn silage drive over pile has been released by Lallemand Animal Nutrition, the makers of Biotal Forage Inoculants.

The video outlines the primary management tools necessary for the proper construction of a drive over pile including:

  1. Maturity and Dry Matter Content
  2. Chop Length
  3. Inoculants
  4. Dimensions/Sizing
  5. Packing
  6. Covering and Sealing
  7. Feedout
  8. Face Management.

Financial losses, both direct and indirect, due to improper storage of high moisture corn costs producers in terms of lost dry matter (due to shrink) and possible health implications due to mycotoxins.


“This video is a tool for producers to help ensure they are getting the most from their valuable forages. With high feed costs, every step in preserving dry matter and quality is essential,” said Dr. Bob Charley, Lallemand Forage Products Manager.

Lallemand identifies specific bacterial strains for forage inoculants based on stringent efficacy criteria and pioneered the identification and application of Lactobacillus buchneri 40788, the first organism added to the AAFCO list of organisms approved for use in animal feeding in the US. This organism is the only strain reviewed by the FDA to allow the claim “for improved aerobic stability of silage and high moisture corn stored for not less than 60 days.”
