Johanns presses EPA administrator to live up to her words on milk regulation

Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) Thursday urged Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson to follow through on her commitment at a Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee hearing Wednesday. Johanns, a member of the EPW Committee, pressed Jackson to finalize a proposed exemption from a regulation that has hung over the heads of dairy farmers for more than two years. The exemption would prevent the EPA from treating spilled milk similar to an oil spill.

Johanns wrote a letter in response to an exchange he had with Jackson regarding EPA regulation of milk storage containers. Jackson stated in the hearing, “We actually have an exemption proposed for milk containers…we are in agreement that we do not need to regulate them.”

“I thank you for reaching the same conclusion as I have -- EPA regulation of milk storage containers is unnecessary and duplicative,” Johanns wrote today. “Terminating the prospect of EPA enactment of this costly, duplicative, and unnecessary regulation will send a positive message to dairy farmers and other stakeholders across the country during these times of economic and regulatory uncertainty.”

Johanns has voiced his concerns over the cloud of uncertainty caused by the proposed milk regulation and consistently expressed his opposition to costly and often short-sighted approaches the EPA has taken to burden the agriculture industry with unnecessary regulation.
