A lawsuit has been filed by the family of a five-year-old girl who got sick after drinking raw milk.

According to KCPQ-TV in Seattle, Wash., the girl was one of three children who tested positive for E. coli. The children had reportedly consumed raw milk products from Cozy Valley Creamery between August and November of last year. The girl spent more than a week in the hospital and needed a blood transfusion.

Washington State, where the girl’s family and the creamery are located, is among a handful of states that still allow raw milk to be sold commercially in a grocery store, according to the KCPQ-TV report.

That point is not lost upon William Marler, food safety attorney, who is representing the family of the five-year-old girl. Marler is calling on state health officials to look at whether raw milk sales in grocery stores should continue — in light of the increased risk, especially among children, for developing  foodborne illinesses when drinking raw milk.

“People really assume when you go into a grocery store that they wouldn’t be selling it unless it was safe,” Marler says.

Stories like this are why there will never be widespread raw milk sales. Over domesticated consumers who can't inform themselves of what they are eating can't be given choices. That little kid was not in a position to decide and needed an adult to look out for her. The adults will have to be the government and the dairy industry. It is sad because raw milk can be a really good thing.

That last statement by Marler could be made about peanuts, strawberries, spinach, turkey, etc. That's not a reason to ban raw milk.

After drinking raw milk for more than 25 years. Raising my whole family on raw milk I find that what is said about raw milk should be applied to all foods. The consumer must understand what it is they are buying. That is not possable with grocery store food. Only by meeting the farmer and seeing for yourself can you find safe good food.
