A story on the Yahoo! home page on Tuesday listed low-fat dairy products as one of the foods that can lower blood pressure.

It referenced a couple of studies, including a 2006 study from Harvard Medical School where people who ate more than three servings per day of low-fat dairy showed a systolic blood pressure reading of 2.6 points less than those who ate less than half a serving per day.

Indeed, points out Greg Miller, executive vice president of research, regulatory and scientific affairs at Dairy Management Inc. and the National Dairy Council, there are many studies that have demonstrated an effect of dairy foods on reducing blood pressure.

“It is likely that multiple nutrients and mechanisms are involved,” he told Dairy Herd Management. “Dairy foods are an important source of calcium, potassium and magnesium which have been associated with reducing blood pressure. Dairy proteins have also been associated with lowering blood pressure,” he added

“The DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) diet is a diet rich in fruits and vegetable and dairy foods has been demonstrated to reduce blood pressure in clinical trials,” Miller said. “We now know that dairy foods are heart-healthy.”

“The modest amount of fat in low-fat dairy is important because it increases the bioavailability of calcium, making it easier for the body to absorb. In addition, milk and dairy products offer blood-pressure-lowering magnesium and potassium.”

Besides low-fat dairy, the story named seven other foods that can lower blood pressure, including celery, cold-water fish, broccoli, black beans, whole-grain oats, berries, and dandelions.

Yes, dandelions.
