Whether your title is Herd Manager, Herdsperson, Feed Manager, or Parlor Manager, you share a commonality with your peers in those “middle management roles,” the need to communicate and manage both up and down the line on the farm. Our middle managers have the unique position of working with the farm owner, sometimes family member and sometimes not, as well as supervising those workers in their areas of responsibility. Those middle roles bring their own sets of challenges and success stories. Those middle roles are vital to the overall dairy operation, but few educational offerings provide just that right fit.

The Penn State Middle Management Conference is an every-other-year event that is planned by a committee of dairy middle managers, Extension educators, and industry personnel who take special interest in creating learning opportunities for those middle roles. This year’s conference is set for Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Best Western Premier Central Hotel and Conference Center in Harrisburg, PA. The keynote address by Mr. Brett Reinford, Cooperation in a Family of Middle Managers, will give the audience a chance to see first-hand how Brett and his brothers work together as middle managers in their dairy operations. Small group sessions with Dr. Darren McGee on Key Performance Indicators, Mr. Shane St. Cyr on Emerging Reproductive Technologies, Tim Beck and Heather Weeks on Selling Your Ideas with Dollars and Sense, and a panel discussion led by Mr. Jeff Harding on Communicating with the Boss, make this a must attend event for key middle managers on a variety of dairy operations.

Past participants shared comments like: “This meeting was great to meet others in similar situations,”  “Good, practical information.  I’ll be back next year,” and “Learned some new ways to build teamwork and communication on the farm.” Registration information for this year’s conference can be found at:  http://extension.psu.edu/animals/dairy/courses/middle-managers-conference.  The Center for Dairy Excellence is providing $50 scholarships for the first 30 registrants, so don’t delay – Register Today!
