News outlets in California have recently reported that there has been additional of the California milk supply for radiation. Headlines like these, “California looking for signs of contamination in grass-eating cows” and “California screening cows for contamination in milk” are not true.
At this time, no additional testing of the milk in California for radiation is being done. Milk is tested on a routine basis -- once per month for radiation. “This is typical routine testing and has been done for many years,” says Mike Sicilia, spokesperson with the California Department of Public Health.
Additional testing of air in California is under way. Air testing for radiation has increased from once per week to once every 48 hours.
At this time, there is no public health threat in the U.S. related to radiation exposure, says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Domestic food safety remains unaffected by events in Japan.
