People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is once again acting its angst over California’s dairy promotions with a lawsuit.
On Wednesday, the animal-rights organization filed suit Sacramento Superior Court against California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Secretary Karen Ross, the CDFA, and the California Milk Advisory Board “for making false and misleading advertising claims about the treatment of cows on California dairy farms and for withholding thousands of related documents that PETA believes will expose the extent of their false claims,” a statement on the group’s Web site says.
A CMAB representative told Dairy Herd Management that the Advisory Board has not yet seen the alleged lawsuit, and is therefore, unable to comment on it at this time.
PETA has a history of suing over California dairy promotions. According to a report in the Sacramento Business Journal, first PETA sued the CMAB in 2002, but that action ended in 2005 after the courts decided that as a quasi- state agency, the board could not be sued as the lawsuit was filed.
PETA has also filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission regarding dairy promotions in California.

Report AbuseWhy doesn"t PETA spend their money on helping animal shelters take care of all the abandoned animals due to the poor economy? PETA is supposed to be "caring" for all animals and cows are being fed and cared for a lot better than some of the smaller creatures.

Report AbuseBecause they are not about treating animals to the best of their ability, they are about putting animal agriculture out of business. Does the average farmer abuse his livestock? no he makes his living from them and if the government would stay out of our industry we would have better prices and be able to turn away unsavory help that might happen to abuse animals when the owners arent looking.

Report AbuseI am not associated with peta - However, I do believe consumers have a right to know the details of how cow's milk is produced. There are ethical implications that people should be concerned with that are being hidden or lied about. Everyone I speak to about cow's milk has no idea that calves don't drink their own mother's milk, that calves often go to slaughter within days/months or that mothers are "retired" at 4 or 5 years old to the "hamburger factory". This information does make a difference to people, as I'm usually faced with a tearful person crying that they "never knew".
Withholding these facts for the sake of sales is akin to stealing money! If the dairy industry is "all that" and more - Stop accepting tax funding. Stop peddling milk/cheese to kids in schools. And start disclosing ALL the information and facts about cow's milk!
Almond, rice, flax seed, soy, oatmilk etc. all contain the same amount or more of calcium and vitamin D that cow's milk is fortified with! Dairy products are not required for human health but actually have negative consequences. Please adult humans - Isn't it time to wean ourselves?
