Runners go further with chocolate milk

Runners wanting to get an edge on the competition may want to stock up on fat-free chocolate milk.

According to a new study published in the Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, runners who refueled with fat-free chocolate milk instead of a carbohydrate-only beverage performed better than competitors who didn’t. In fact, runners who consumed chocolate milk post-workout ran 28 percent longer in their next timed run and had a 38 percent increase in their markers of muscle-building.

WOWT 6 News reports that researchers from Connecticut State University, University of Connecticut and Eastern Michigan University studied eight moderately trained men in two trails, separated by one week. Study participants were given either 16 ounces of fat-free chocolate milk or a carbohydrate-only beverage equal in calories after an intense 45-minute run.

The reason behind chocolate milk’s success as a post-exercise drink may be tied to the nutrient profile of chocolate milk, according to New Channel 5, which combines the right mix of high-quality protein and carbohydrates to help athletes build lean muscle and replenish what athletes lose in sweat.

This latest research only reaffirms chocolate milk’s role in refueling athletes. The post-exercise recovery benefits of chocolate milk are currently highlighted in a recent got milk? advertising campaign. And, a 2011 study pushed chocolate milk to the top of the list for athlete refueling.
