Fire killed nearly two dozen animals at a dairy in New York state on Friday.

The fire occurred at Peter’s Dairy Farm near the town of Castleton.

According to the Albany Times Union, owner Paul Peter lost a main dairy barn and smaller barns attached to it, which at the time housed calves and heifers that were killed by the blaze.

Peter told the newspaper that his roughly 50 dairy cows were outside the barn at the time. Read more.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire was still under investigation, though Peter said the fire appeared to originate near an electric vacuum pump.
