The American Meat Institute has launched a new animal handling Web site that will serve as a resource for the meat industry, consumers and media about the treatment of livestock in meat processing plants.

The site, www.animalhandling.org, includes sections on animal welfare, government regulations, voluntary guidelines, auditing, training and animal welfare assistance.

Also available are the 2005 AMI Foundation's Recommended Animal Handling Guidelines and Audit Guide, written by animal welfare expert Temple Grandin of Colorado State University. You can download the guide for free, and it includes AMI audit forms for pigs, cattle and sheep.
