According to a recent analysis posted on Cattle Network, the National Animal Identification System should not be written off just yet.

The program has received some federal funding — to the tune of $5.3 million — for fiscal year 2010-2011. And a legal challenge was recently dismissed. These actions, combined with simpler technology, may mean an extension to the program’s life.

However, those groups and individuals campaigning for its demise are still in full-throat that the program is overly burdensome and unnecessary.

Meanwhile, several countries have instituted mandatory tracing systems, which may have an impact on what happens in the United States.
