Listen: Canada's Chief Veterinary Officer announces BSE in Alberta cow

Canadian officials said today that another case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy has been found in a 6-year-old cow from an Alberta farm. Authorities theorize that because of her age, the cow could have gotten the disease by eating leftover feed after the 1997 ban on the use of cattle parts in animal feed.

The affected animal did not enter the food chain or animal-feed chain.

Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns that the United States will not cut off cattle shipments from Canada as a result of the finding.
