California cheese production sets new record

California cheese producers cranked out more than 2.2 billion pounds of cheese last year. According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture cheese production totaled 2,207,105 pounds. That’s 3.3 percent higher than the 2,137,546 pounds produced in 2005.

Milk production in the state also posted a new record in 2006. Dairy producers increased milk production by 3.4 percent for a total of 38.8 billion pounds.
