The Sierra Club has given notice that it intends to sue Peter Albers, owner of Heritage Dairy in Dixon, Calif., for violating the Clean Water Act. Federal law requires the group must give a 60-day notice before actually filling the suit in U.S. District Court.
The problem occurred in November when a pump that was part of the manure storage system at the dairy failed. Approximately 1.3 million gallons of manure water flowed into several streams that lead to the Sacramento River.
This is not the first federal environmental lawsuit against a livestock producer for the Sierra Club. Similar suits have been filed in Michigan, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. One of the club’s top priorities is making sure large livestock operations adhere to all environmental regulations.
