California dairies now have the opportunity to receive credits for supplying power via methane digesters, after a new state law went into the books.

The law, authored by assemblywoman Gloria Negrete-McLeod, provides that biogas-powered generating facilities up to one megawatt in size are eligible for net metering until January 2006. Current law limits net metering to solar and wind electric generating facilities.

Net metering allows a customer to receive credit against energy they consumed from the energy generated – essentially running the electric meter backward when the methane digester produces more power than the customer is using.
