Canadian officials have confirmed another case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The cross-bred beef cow was about 15 years old and was therefore born before the ruminant feed ban went into effect. The cow resided at a farm north of Winnipeg, in the Manitoba province of Canada

Canadian officials have launched an investigation to track down the birth farm, herd mates and offspring of the cow that was purchased in 1992. Due to the animal’s age, the most probable source of the disease is probably contaminated feed.

No part of the animal entered the human food chain, or animal feed systems.
