Cheese and butter stocks rose last month, according to the Cold Storage report from USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service that was released this afternoon.

Commercial cheese stocks reached their highest level since August 1985, with total stocks climbing to 957 million pounds on May 31. That’s a 9 percent increase from a year earlier. Commercial American cheese stocks were tagged at just over 608 million pounds, up 7 percent from 2008.

Butter stocks were also up 5 percent from last month to just over 251 million pounds. But the good news is that this is down 7 percent from a year ago.
