According to Mike Hutjens, extension dairy specialist at the University of Illinois, if producers are not evaluating byproduct feeds for use in their rations they are ‘missing the boat.’ That’s one of the messages Hutjens had for producers attending the Illinois Dairy Days meetings going on across the state this month.

Byproduct feeds such as dried distillers grains, wet distillers grain, corn gluten, and pork meat and bone meal are readily available in Illinois and can be used to replace corn in the diet.

When considering a byproduct feed, or incorporating more of them into a dairy ration, Hutjens recommends that producers work with their nutritionist to evaluate which will fit best in their ration without sacrificing herd healthy or productivity.
