The company building a $50 million cheese plant in Lake Norden, S.D. has been ordered to stop construction. Davisco Foods apparently lacks some of the necessary permits and could face fines for starting construction without them.
The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources ordered the company to stop construction of the plant’s wastewater treatment plant in December. Construction on the mozzarella plant began in August 2002. Opening is planned for Nov. 10.
Davisco spokesman John Davis told the Sioux City Journal that the company was acting in good faith. Davisco believed the treatment plant was within the city of Lake Norden. Therefore, a county permit was not needed. And according to Davis, the DENR did not inform the company that it needed state approval for the project until November 2003.
DENR officials say they have been working with Davisco all along and tthat requirements had been made clear.
Fines for unauthorized construction could be as much as $10,000 per day.
