Cows die from excessive rainfall

Heavy rainfall has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of cows in southern California.

Nathan DeBoom, assistant director of the Milk Producers Council in Chino, Calif., estimates that the number of mortalities from the Feb. 18-23 rains could easily top 600. Rains turned a number of dry-lot dairies in San Bernardino and Riverside counties into muddy messes, making it difficult for cows in mud up to their udders to move back and forth to the barn or even lie down. Some of the animals have succumbed to pneumonia or exhaustion.
