Dairy-cow slaughter increased nearly 11 percent in September versus August and 14 percent compared to last year, according to the USDA's "Livestock Slaughter" report, released last Friday. In September, 248,000 head of dairy cattle went to market. That's 24,000 head more than August and 31,000 head more than a year ago.

Now that cows are heading to market through the Cooperatives Working Together program, October slaughter levels could climb even more.
