Dairy culling activity ramped up last month, according to the Livestock Slaughter report released today. Total dairy culls were reported at 256,000 for June, up 44,000 head from May.

The increase is due in large part to the marketing of animals under the Cooperatives Working Together program.

The June 2009 figures show a 75,000-head increase in dairy cow culling from June 2008 when 181,000 head were removed from the national herd. So far this year, culling is up 185,000 head versus 2008.
