Just six short years ago ErathCounty was the dairy capital of Texas. Today, producers there say the local industry is in trouble.

A decade of environmental battles, including lawsuits with the city of Waco that were just recently settled, have dairy producers concerned over their ability to get the state permits they need to stay in business and expand. Currently 50 permit requests are awaiting approval from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Some of those permits date back to 2001.

Problem is, when you put an industry on hold – any industry – it leads to decline. According to an article in the Waco Tribune given the current regulatory climate lenders there are wary of loaning money to dairy producers for improvements.
