With many consumers wanting to buy fresh food from a local source, here is an opportunity for some dairies to establish a niche in tough economic times.

South Mountain Creamery in Middletown, Md., has already capitalized on this trend by delivering fresh milk in reusable glass bottles to at least 4,500 households in the Washington, D.C., area.

And, South Mountain Creamery is charging premium prices -- $3.25 per half gallon or milk, plus a $3.75 delivery charge, according to an article in The Washington Times.
