Men who include more lowfat dairy products in their diets may reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a study in the May 9 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The study analyzed 41,254 males with no history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. During the 12-year follow-up period, researchers from the Massachusetts GeneralHospital in Boston, along with colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health, documented 1,243 new cases of type 2 diabetes.

The researchers found that each serving-per-day increase in total dairy intake was associated with a 9 percent lower risk for type 2 diabetes.

“This study shows men the additional value of including dairy products, including milk, cheese and yogurt, in their daily diet to help them lead a healthier lifestyle,” said Greg Miller, senior vice president of nutrition and product innovation for the National Dairy Council.
