The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last week that the incidence of foodborne illness attributed to E. coli declined significantly again in 2004. In fact, the reductions have met the United States’ Healthy People 2010 goal five years ahead of schedule. Working in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration and the USDA, the CDC found that the overall incidence of E. coli O157:H7 cases has declined 42 percent since the baseline of 1996-1998. Two months ago, the USDA announced that the percentage of E. coli O157:H7-positive ground-beef samples collected in 2004 fell by 43.3 percent when compared to 2003 and has declined 80 percent since 2000.
