Mycoleptodiscus crown and root rot has been around since the 1950s, but for some reason, a couple of Midwest forage labs saw in increase of the disease last summer. The affected plants were from new and established fields.

Generally, the disease doesn’t cause big problems for alfalfa growers, but the uptick in samples with the problem has given agronomists pause.

They are not sure if the disease is becoming a larger concern in alfalfa production, or if it was just last year’s unusual weather pattern that caused an increase in observation. Either way, experts say the disease bears watching in the next few years.
