Fonterra under fire for pollution

The Otago Regional Council seeks to hold Fonterra accountable for its alleged pollution of the Clutha River.

The report lists that pollutants leaving the cheese plant are “350 times above the allowable limit,” reports a news article on the Stuff.co.nz Web site. The cheese factory in question is located in Stirling, South Otago, New Zealand.  The council’s resource management director called Fonterra’s waste practices “simply not good enough.”

Although Fonterra officials were surprised at the depth of the criticism, officials have pledged to work with the council to address environmental concerns. For more from Stuff.co.nz, go to: http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3569997a13,00.html
