Last week, five environmental groups petitioned the Oregon Court of Appeals to overturn the state's new Confined Animal Feeding Operation waste-discharge-permit regulations. The groups contend that the new rules shut the public out of the permitting process. And, since the Oregon Department of Agriculture issues the permits, the group argues that it is a conflict of interest for the agency to also regulate the permitees.

However, the Oregon Dairy Farmers' Association points out that none of the petitioning groups offered any input during the preceding two years when the regulations were being developed. For more information, click here.
